"What causes varicose veins and spider veins?
The heart pumps blood filled with oxygen and nutrients to the whole body. Arteries carry blood from the heart towards the body parts. Veins carry oxygen-poor blood from the body back to the heart.

The squeezing of leg muscles pumps blood back to the heart from the lower body. Veins have valves that act as one-way flaps. These valves prevent the blood from flowing backwards as it moves up the legs. If the one-way valves become weak, blood can leak back into the vein and collect there. This problem is called venous insufficiency. Pooled blood enlarges the vein and it becomes varicose. Spider veins can also be caused by the backup of blood. Hormone changes, inherited factors, and exposure to the sun can also cause spider veins.

How common are abnormal leg veins?
About 50 to 55% of American women and 40 to 45% of American men suffer from some form of vein problem. Varicose veins affect 1 out of 2 people age 50 and older.

Who usually has varicose veins and spider veins?
Many factors increase a person's chances of developing varicose or spider veins. These include:

      * Increasing Age
      * Having family members with vein problems or being born with weak vein valves
      * Hormonal changes. These occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Taking birth control pills and other medicines containing estrogen and progesterone also increase the risk of varicose or spider veins
      * Pregnancy. During pregnancy there is a huge increase in the amount of blood in the body. This can cause veins to enlarge. The expanding uterus also puts pressure on the veins. Varicose veins usually improve within 3 months after delivery. A growing number of abnormal veins usually appear with each additional pregnancy
      * Obesity, leg injury, prolonged standing and other things that weaken vein valves
      * Sun exposure, which can cause spider veins on the cheeks or nose of a fair-skinned person"

does anyone know how to get rid of spider veins without like surgery or anything like that or how to cover them up?
cause i'm actually only a teen and i have then and it's really embarassing and they make my legs look realy ugly.
    so please help!

    • ANSWER:
I had some success in reducing the appearance of my spider veins, but I used a variety of things, and I'm not certain which worked best.

Good support stockings will definitely help, I used the MediPeds brand calf-high stockings (which I got at Wal-Mart for around per pair, so they're much less expensive than the surgical stockings and things like that!). I wore them at night when I went to bed, and sometimes during the day if I was wearing long pants.

I had one spider vein that really got to be nasty (a big purplish blotch on my lef that looked like a huge bruise). In addition to the stockings, I used Blue Emu on it, and also, I would go to the gym where I had a membership and massage that part of my leg with the jets in the pool.

SPIDER VEINS!!! YUCK!!! Can anyone tell me . . . how I can?
get rid of spider veins without surgery? I'm very self-concious about my body at the moment due to the fact that I have experienced spider veins on my legs for the past year. I really don't know what to do anymore. I have already had scelerotherapy and it was fine only for the first couple of months. Alot of bruising; therefore, I don't even know if it made a difference after my treatment because it took me two months to heal completely. I am so over this headache. I'm normally a very chippy, happy-go-lucky person and now this one problem with my body is making me feel so depressed. I don't have medical insurane and I can no longer afford this. ANY ADVICE WILL BE APPRECIATED. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

How do I get rid of my spider veins on my legs without surgery?
I am 18 years old and a little over a year ago i started noticing that my leg was getting this spider vein right where it gets pressed when i cross my legs. I stopped crossing my legs but now I'm noticing that around it red little ones are starting to appear and i want to get rid of it

    • ANSWER:
Spider veins are caused from weak veins and poor circulation. So, the natural way to go is to attack the root of the problem. There are a few things you can do here. First of all, its good that you stopped crossing your legs, beause that can cause spider veins, obviously you noticed this. A few more things you can do: do not sit or stand in the same place for too long, if you HAVE to them try switching your weight from side to side to promote circulation of the blood. Try elevating your legs above the level of your hips when you are sitting or laying down. Don't wear tight fitting clothes because it could constrict circulation. Further more, you really need a healthy diet (cliche, I know), but it is very true. Eat lots of fiber, this will help to keep you from getting constipation which is not good if you are fighting spider veins, you can find lots of this in fruits (lots of berries!), vegs, and grains, cut out the salt from your diet. Also, garlic, ginger, and onions are all great for breaking down fibrin (which surrounds your veins), this is prefect because these foods can easily be added to your cooking. You might want to consider drinking tea several times a day, ones that will aid you are Hawthorns, green tea, rosemary and ginger as they aid in circulation. I have read that drinking water with a pinch of cayenne peper will also help with cirulation, and therefor your spider veins (tip: why not add a little bit of apple cider vinegar too -organic-, although it tastes terrible, it has so many benefits I can't list). I would recommend a multi-vitamin if you are not taking one already, these offer tons of vitamins and minerals that will aid in keeping your veins strong. Aside from having a regulary healthy diet there are a few herbal suplements that have been found to significantly inprove veins health and circulation, and therefore spider veins. Horse Chestnut, Diosmin, and Brutcher's Broom, there are more, but these are the most popular, only take as the bottle suggests. As far as tropical remedies go, there are lots of creams you can buy from the store, though these tend to rely on the use of vitamin K as the main benefitical ingredient. From my research, I have read tons of reports that these creams do help after several weeks of application, but I have also read scientific writings that say vit-K is not well absorbed through the skin. But, you can absorb it enternally, you can get it in a multi easily, or through your diet with lots of green leafy veg. So maybe the creams work, maybe they dont, but hey if you don't care to spend the money, why not try out a bottle and see the results- like I said, tons of people say they do. Another tropical remedy that I can offer is an apple cider vinegar one (I'm telling you, it's great for everything), I have read of two ways to do this, you can either simply rub the ACV on the spider veins, or you can soak a cloth in the cider and then wrap it around the area for about 30 mins. Lastly, there are leg compression wraps that you can buy online, however, I have not done extensive research on these and only mention them because I have heard about them over and over, you might want to invest some reseach in them yourself and see if they would help (they are said to work by not allowing the blood to pool up at the ends of your legs). So these are the main highlights of the research I have done. Just as a note, don't expect instant results, but if you keep at it and work hard, you can def. get rid of those spider veins. Too bad spider veins are not considered beautiful, because I'm pretty sure we ALL have them, haha. Hope this info helps you. (ignore any misspelling, it's 6 in the morning and I haven't slept yet)
