Lump On Leg Under Skin

Anytime one feels a lump in the body, mental alarm bells ring out with fears of cancer. This natural reaction is fairly universal for most people. When the lump is felt in the bottom of the foot, where it can cause pain with every step, the fear can be even greater owing to the noticeable symptoms the lump has when walking or standing. Fortunately, true malignant tumors of deep tissue in the foot are very rare. However, it is not uncommon for many people to develop a benign firm mass on the bottom of the foot arch called a plantar fibroma (or superficial fibromatosis).

Plantar fibromas develop from a part of the foot known as the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a thick, strap-like dense tissue that connects the heel bone and the ball of the foot. This tissue is broad, traversing across the entire width of the foot in three distinct bands. It is essentially a thick ligament, and provides some rigidity to the arch of the foot. In some people, small nodules, or growths, can develop along the surface of the fascia, and can slowly expand over time. These growths can be single, multiple in number, or one mass with numerous areas of bulging. The nodules are well affixed to the fascia, and do not move when one tries to move the overlying skin around. In general, these nodules grow very slowly, and do not appear overnight. However, they may seem to suddenly appear as most people cannot feel them until they become very large or develop pain. At times, people who rub their feet might notice them early on, but most people only notice the mass all of a sudden when it is big enough to expand the underlying skin or is tender to pressure. One can rest assured that these masses are benign, and conversion to a malignant cancer (fibrosarcoma) is almost unheard of.

Symptoms are usually related to irritation of the fascia tissue and inflammation around the nodule when one stands on the foot and places pressure on the fibroma. Many of these plantar fibromas are painless masses that are not irritated by pressure on the sole of the foot. Some are painful, though, and can limit ones ability to comfortably walk. This is especially true when the mass pushes into a sensitive tissue, such as one of the many nerves found traversing the bottom of the foot above or below the plantar fascia. Barefoot walking and shoe use can be uncomfortable due to the lump, and other parts of the plantar fascia can become irritated as a result.

Treatment is geared towards either accommodating the mass to make those who suffer with it more comfortable, or removing it all together. It should be noted that if the mass does not cause any discomfort, it does not need to be treated. Its growth cannot be slowed or prevented with early treatment, and aggressive treatment of a non-painful plantar fibroma is not necessary. When there is pain involved, treatment with accommodation or removal is clearly recommended. Accommodating the mass involves the use of stretches to keep the fascia limber, anti-inflammatory medication, and accommodative inserts that pad and protect the area around the mass. In some people with painful plantar fibromas, this can help relieve, or at least temporarily control, the pain. If this is not effective, then surgery is typically needed to remove the mass itself. This surgery can run the range from simple to highly complicated depending on the size of the mass. Small plantar fibromas are easily removed with out too much tissue loss, and the resulting tissue gap can eventually fill with scar tissue to keep the structure of the plantar fascia intact. In any removal procedure, it is vital that all of the fibroma, along with a margin of normal fascia and the overlying under surface of the skin be removed to help prevent reoccurrence. Medium and large size fibromas are much more difficult to remove. Their removal causes large gaps in the plantar fascia, and can effect the stability of the bottom of the foot to a certain degree. This also leaves open an internal area that can be apt to developing scars and adhesions in the surface under and on the skin. At times, the resulting tissue can potentially be more painful than the original fibroma if healing is poor. These gaps need to be filled in if possible to maintain integrity of the fascia and limit scar tissue. Newer tissue grafts that act as scaffolds for whatever tissue is attached to them can help with this problem. The remaining fascia tissue will creep into these grafts, effectively restoring the fascia to a similar state as before surgery (and before the mass). Whether large or small, all plantar fibromas have a fairly high rate of reoccurrence, and even the best surgical technique cannot necessarily prevent this from happening. Simply put, some people quickly regrow these masses even after removal. This is not a sign so much for malignancy as much as its a sign of a common problem after excision surgery for plantar fibromas. There is no way to effectively control this potential for regrowth after surgery unfortunately.

One final note should be made regarding plantar fibromas, and foot masses in general. As stated previously, true deep foot malignant tumors are very rare...but they do occur. It is recommended that a medical evaluation by a foot specialist (podiatrist) be performed to ensure that the mass felt is simply a common plantar fibroma. An MRI may need to be performed if there are unusual characteristics to the shape or location of the mass (or even if surgery to remove it is being planned). Less commonly, a biopsy may be considered if there is great abnormality or questionable findings on the exam. While all this may seem like a lot of time and money for a little mass, it can potentially make the difference between a healthy foot and a leg amputation if there truly is something more abnormal to begin with.

  2. QUESTION:
Lump under skin above my leg?
A few days ago I began feeling a fair sized lump under my skin. It's placed on the very front on the bend in my leg. When I touch it, it's sore like a bruise, but when I feel it a bit more, there's a lump about the size of a nickle. I don't know what could have caused it. I haven't hit that area on anything, and yet it just suddenly showed up. Is it something that sounds normal and will go away, or should I be making a doctor appointment?

Lump on my lower leg under the skin had for years...?
Thank you for taking the time to read this! :)

So I have had this lump under the skin on my lower leg
and I've had it for years. You can't see it if i'm standing or anything
I only really notice it when I have my legs crossed with that leg on top or if my leg is flat pressed up against something.
It doesn't hurt, it never has.
It's like the circumference of a nickle I'd say.
I vaguely remember being kicked like really really hard there back when it first appeared

Again like I said it's been years.
I'm just curious as to what it could be.

Don't quite understand what's the deal but should I get it checked? Many thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Please go see your doctor. This could be serious. It could be a blood clot, a varicose vein, peripheral artery disease, a lypoma cyst...all sorts, so it's best to see a doctor to get it checked out.
      Hope you feel better!

  6. QUESTION:
Lump under skin on my leg?
I've had a lump on my legs for months now, maybe almost a year. I can only see it when I put pressure on it, like stand on my toes. It's not on my shin, but it's next to it, outer leg. It doesn't hurt at all either nor is it hard because I can press down on it and it's like pressing on a regular body part, but I'm just wondering what it could be.

    • ANSWER:
See a doctor - it's probably nothing (like a harmless cyst), but it could be cancerous. I'm not a professional, so I have no idea, but if it were me, I would see a doctor.

  7. QUESTION:
What is this hard lump under my skin in my groin/leg area?
I woke up with a hard lump about the size ofa quater on the inside of my skin between my leg and groin. It is a little sore only when i push on it otherwise you cant see or feel it, I am wondering what it may be and if i can get rid of it without going to the doctor. Thanks for taking the time to help me!!

  8. QUESTION:
Lump under skin on upper leg?
I'm a 19 year old male and about two years ago, I noticed a fairly large hard spot under the skin on the upper part my leg, about 6in below the groin area. It is not really hard and could almost feel like a tight muscle but it is round and about the circumference of a nickle. I when I first noticed it, I was told that it was normal and a part of growing. If that was the case, should it still be here after two years? It does not hurt or bother me, though slightly more sensitive when squeezed.

Also, I'm in college right now and it has been quite stressful trying to keep up with school and work as well. I'm far from overweight, but quite out of shape and have gained a bit of fat in my stomach area. I just recently noticed a hardish lump under the skin just above my left hip. It seems to be a part of something somewhat stringy, but at this part it is slightly larger hard. It moves around as I squeeze it but is not really tender. I've never noticed this before, but then I've never had much fat before and didn't know if this is normal. Its more oval shaped about as thick as a pea.

I thought about getting check out but wasn't sure if it was necessary. I just got kicked off my parents medicaid so currently I have no insurance. Any advice is appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
well whoever told you that this was normal is wrong. this is definitely not normal, and needs to get checked. your college should have a student health center, and it would be less expensive to go there.

    • ANSWER:
It could be a sebaceous cyst. A common and effective method of treatment involves placement of a heating pad or hot compress directly on the cyst for about fifteen minutes, twice daily, for about 10 days (depending on size and location of the cyst). Make sure you use clean or sterile cloths or pads. This method works by bringing the wax-like material inside of the cyst to a temperature at which it melts, and can be reabsorbed and processed by the body, as a small amount of oily fluid. This methodology is not applicable for non-sebaceous cysts, however, as other varieties of cysts do not contain the same hardened sebum deposits, and therefore do not melt to be reabsorbed by the body.

  20. QUESTION:
lump under skin tender to touch?
I'm a 31 year old seemingly healthy female. Last month I found a lump/knot under the skin on my right upper inner thigh that was tender to touch. It went away after a week or two so I didn't think anything else about it. Well, yesterday I notice another lump/knot under the skin on my right leg but closer to my groin area more towards the front of my body. They're maybe a little bigger than a marble. What could this be and should I see a doctor? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

    • ANSWER:
the site and the symptoms suggest that you may have inflammation of your inguinal lymph nodes. its not dangerous but can get problematic if the lymph nodes have gotten bigger in size because of underlying infection. I may be wrong as its difficult to come to a diagnosis just by reading about it. Consult your doctor. its not normal to have lumps/swellings/knots.

What would cause a soft lump under the skin as a result of a 2 year old shin contusion?
Two years ago I bruised and indented my shine very badly by falling down the stairs of my deck. My leg slipped through the step on the back and body fell forward pushing the step into my shin. The brusing has never gone away completely and the area is still sore and indented two years later. Recently I noticed a small soft lump under the skin where the shin is usually indented. Today I noticed the lumped has grown. I am thinking I may have a hematoma but I am unsure. I am not sure if this is something that requires a trip to the Dr?

    • ANSWER:
It is probably a cist, a build up of fluid under the skin the body builds as a kind of protection, usually after an injury. But, with the injury and the fact that it has grown, you should really go to the doctor to find out what's really going on.

i lump appeared on the back of my leg went down big bruise came out,can still feel the lump slitly under skin?

    • ANSWER:
It sounds like something I get quite frequently, which is surface blood clots. I have been to my physician several times because of course you think blood clot, OMG! They assured me that they are not deep vein and are not as dangerous. They told me to put heat on the site and take Advil every 6 hours. When the clot breaks I get a bruise, there is still a slight bump under the skin but it eventually goes away. I would suggest that you talk with your doctor about it as well, since I can't see it and not sure if it is the same thing, but it does sound as so. Good luck.

  30. QUESTION:
Lump under skin in groin crease?
Lump under skin in groin crease?
    Im 15.
Its not sore, only if I put pressure on it. It's a little bigger than a pea.
It sorta feels like cyst but I'm not sure?
It's in the crease between my leg and my groin.

    • ANSWER:
You have a whole chain of lymph nodes in your crease between your leg and groin (that's called your inguinal fold). It is not uncommon for you to be able to feel them. This is probably not cause for concern unless you notice that it becomes bigger, painful, or immovable. Also, if you have any kind of infection (even just a cold) it is common to have your lymph nodes become enlarged; this is normal, and it will go away when the infection goes away. Your lymph nodes can also become enlarged locally if you have some sort of irritation in the area (like a bug bite or a bad pimple).

Hamster has growing lump under leg?
My male hamster that I've had for a year and 7 months, has a lump that I'm concerned about. It showed up a month to two months ago and it's grown, but not a whole lot. It's under his "arm" and it's kind of squishy. I haven't tried pressing on it, as I don't want to hurt him, but it's definitely not hard. Abscess? Tumor? Some other kind of growth? He's acting completely normal and happy, eating, drinking, exercising etc but I just noticed it has grown some so I thought I'd get some opinions. Thx! Oh and it's not any weird color, it's under his skin so it's just skin color (pink/black).
Ok yesterday when he got up I looked and it must have bled some (a little dried blood on his fur). Not sure if he bit it or what. Still just as big though. Also, he seems to be drinking a lot of water. I could be paranoid though.

    • ANSWER:
It's either a hernia, cyst or tumor. I'd get it checked out by a vet, just to be on the safe side. :)

I woke up some days ago to find a hard lump about the size of a nickle no bigger than a quarter on the inside of my skin between my leg and groin. u know, where the crease is at. the top It is a little sore only when i push on it otherwise I can't feel it. I remember having this a few years ago b4, not knowing what it was. My mother told me to wait until it went down, and it went down eventually. I just can't remember how long it took. I just got off an antibiotic a few weeks ago for bv so me and my fiance had discontinued intercourse during that time. Ever since I was finished with it I think it gave me a yeast infection afterwards and I keep urinating. My tests for chlamydia, gohno and trich came out (-) b4 I took the antibiotics. I don't think this lump has anything to do with it tho, for the fact that it happened to me b4 when I wasn't even having sex. I am wondering what it may be and if i can get rid of it without going to a doc, or what do u think it could've came from. I shave
oh, and can anyone help me with the frequent urination also? I appreciate it

    • ANSWER:
I had the exact same thing happen with the lump! How weird.. It came back sporadically for a couple years but has been gone now for 3 years or so. I think it was just a muscle inflamation type thing. Never hurt, no redness or anything just a small lump like you said under the skin, almost like a knot. Everytime I would say I was going to the dr it would go away! But no STD's or anything like that. Not sure about the frequent urination but I would see a dr asap as it can be caused by any number of serious things..

    • ANSWER:
It sounds like the area you're describing is where your lymph node for that side of your groin would be located. There is another one on the other side of your body in the same area.

When the lymph nodes are irritated or fighting an infection, they become enlarged and swell up like you're describing.

I would suggest seeing your doctor about this, but it's likely nothing that requires an ER trip.

  38. QUESTION:
Hard lump under skin in pubic mound region?
I discovered this hard lump under the skin in my genital region, right next to the fold where the leg connects to the hip. It's about the size of a pinky nail, does not hurt regardless of pressure applied, but has no 'head' like a pimple and does not seem to intend on growing one. I've used hot compresses but nothing changes. The skin above it is smooth (minus, of course, the pubic hairs growing on it/around it) and only slightly paler than the rest of my skin in the area. I never even noticed it was there until I felt it while adjusting my clothing. Since it doesn't hurt I wasn't too worried until it never really went away. I've never had boils or skin cysts before, and very very rarely have I gotten ingrown hairs. Is this something I need checked immediately, or can it wait til my next gyno appointment later on? What exactly could it be?

    • ANSWER:
Hey, Well i don't know what you have although i have what you have too.
I asked my doctor about this and she said that It's nothing to be worried about.
So, if i were you i might ask my doctor.
Mine is also in the same area.
      I got really worried
But then i asked. That's what doctors are for.

  39. QUESTION:
Tiny ball like lump under skin?
I have had this ball lump thing on my leg(shin) for years, its like a stone but perfectly round. Im always bugging my doctor so I feel too embarrased to ask!!!! I can move it and its sore whenever it gets hit. Any ideas, please....
Please dont use the "C" word PLEASE!!!!!

    • ANSWER:
Seems like excess tissue deposit underneath the skin, I have one of these too but if it is not coming out of the skin you dont have to worry about it. You can have it surgically removed if you want. If it is red in color or appears infected have your doctor look at it.

i have four lumps under my skin, two on each leg, right next to my crotch, what are they?
they feel kind of soft, and its obviously not that skin tag stuff, cause this is under the skin; id be really scared right now if they werent symmetrical but they are in the exact same spot on either side, but what really scares me is now there is 2 on either side (as opposed to 1 on either side, which is what i felt yesterday, maybe i just missed the other two) anyway, my question is:
    could they be cancerous?
they are sore, and my doctor said it might have something to do with the possible folliculitis or whatever its called on the back of my head, but how would that tie into tumors? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

  45. QUESTION:
    Lump found under the skin?
Last June, I discovered that I had a lump under the skin on my crotch. It's about half an inch away from the fold of my leg on my crotch. it started off about the size of a BB, and numb and no color. Now, it is still completely under the skin, slightly tender to the touch, has a light brown color to it, but it has grown to about the size of a large bean.
I've researched some things and nothing seems to add up with all of the symptoms. I'm assuming it is some form of cyst, but would like to have a possible answer to what kind before I go to the doctors to get it checked out. I'd rather not have a lot of unneeded tests be taken and make me break the bank!
If any doctors have any insight to what it could be, that would be great!

    Thanks in advance

    • ANSWER:
Dont assume anything about lumps. Very dangerous thing to do.
      Go see a doctor.

  46. QUESTION:
    lump under puppy skin?
on th armpit kinda place on one of my puppy front legs there is a weird lump it is quite small and under the skin it is quite hard feeling and i can move it a little bit but it seems like part of it i stuck to the inside of his skin also if i put any pressure on it when i am feeling it he dont mind am going to the vets in a week or so so will ask then but nay ideas what it could be?

    • ANSWER:
Its' more than likley a Cyst.
More often than not, it isn't cancerous. My dog has one, the size of a small grape (but flatter), and she's had it the majority of her life.
You cannot get your fingers under or around it, and it doesn't lift away from the skin.
It causes her no problems, but whenever she's in the vets, we get them to check it, which they do by taking some blood from it. If you notice it starting to suddenly get bigger, or multiplying, consult a vet IMMEDIATLY.
If you really don't like it, I believe they are fairly easily removed, by making a slit in the skip, and just popping it out by pressing your thumbs against two sides of it. But PLEASE don't try and do it yourself. They can bleed a lot. If you want it removed, as a vet.
