If you are at risk for developing varicose veins, you need to educate yourself on what you can to do to avoid them. Not only are they very unattractive, varicose veins can cause ulcers of the lower legs which can lead to infections. So read on to discover ways that you can avoid varicose veins.

Varicose veins are large purple looking veins that develop mainly in the legs, more specifically in the calf area of the leg. They will look like huge cords or ropes and protrude significantly from the skin. These protruding veins can become very painful and some may develop into ulcers that will be very hard to heal.

So what measures 00004000 can you take to avoid developing varicose veins?

First of all, get plenty of exercise. Walking and other types of activities can increase the blood flow in your legs to keep the blood from pooling in the veins.

Be very careful to watch your weight and watch what you eat. Obesity will produce added pressure on your legs which can contribute to varicose veins. Eating a poor diet that makes you retain water can add to the problem also. Keep your weight under control and eat a healthy diet with plenty of low salt food and fruits and vegetables.

Try to keep from sitting or standing for long periods of time. You should make it a point to change positions every 30 minutes or so to improve blood flow. If possible, take a short walk or break every 30 minutes to stimulate blood flow throughout your body. If you sit a lot, try to avoid crossing your legs. While this may be very comfortable for you, it will interrupt the blood flow in your legs.

Take note of what you are wearing. High heels do not work the calf muscles like low heels do. Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes around your waist and groin areas. This can cut off the circulation to the lower body and increase your risk for varicose veins.

Elevate you legs several times a day. If possible, lie down on the floor and place several pillows under your legs to elevate them above your heart. This will improve your venous circulation and increase the blood flow in your legs.

You may want to purchase a pair of compression stockings to wear if you are in a job that requires you being on your feet all day. These stockings will steadily squeeze your legs all day, therefore increasing blood flow throughout your legs. These stockings can be purchased at your local pharmacy or your doctor can write you a prescription for compression stockings. Just be sure to get the ones that fit you properly. If you require help, ask someone in the pharmacy to help you with your choice. Compression socks for both men and women are also available if you prefer to wear socks.

So there you have several ways to reduce your risk for developing varicose veins. Use these preventive measures and you may never have to worry about varicose veins!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Should I be concerned about a large vein protruding on back of calve after broken tibia and fibula surgery?
A friend recently broke his fibula, tibia and femur bones. He is left with steel rods and screws through out his leg. He is in a lot of pain but somewhat mobile. This occurred about 2 weeks ago. We recently noticed he has a large vein protruding from the back of his calve, near his ankle. It looks like a varicose vein. He is not sure if this was there before. The swelling is starting to go down, which may also be why it is more noticeable.

I am most concerned about blood clots and wonder if this could be a sign of one, or if it is a normal occurrence after injuries and surgeries like this. He sees the doctor on Monday, but it's 1am on Friday and I am not sure if this is, "call the doctor worthy." He is taking an aspirin a day and I just told him to take one just to be safe.

Can anyone please tell me about varicose veins & broken capillaries and if they can be reversed or improved?
Can you please tell me if broken capillaries can be reversed I have a few on my leg where my office chair rubbed me - I no longer use that chair.

Can you also tell me if broken capillaries and varicose veins (mine are only near the surface not protruding the skin surface) have anything to do with weight, alcohol consupmtion and smoking I dont do these latter two to excess, just wondering if it contributes.

I put on alot of weight thanks to SSRI (I have thrown them away thanks to researching natural therapies and also amino acid and the brain research :D ) ...I have lost 10 kgs but need to lose another 30 or so kg's, can u tell me about these things in reference to varicose veins and broken capillaries and the reversal of?
    Thanks,

  3. QUESTION:
Anyone know anything about lumps under the skin?
Hi, for the past two years or so, I have had a strange, very soft lump under the skin on the top of my left shin. It is only visible when i apply pressure to the ball of my foot, or stand up with most of my weight on my left leg. When i feel it, it can easily be pushed back into the skin, and i feel no hard, definite shape. It is spherical, which makes me think it is not a protruding vein or anything. And it's not hard at all, which makes me think its not a cyst. Any ideas? probably nothing serious, but sure as hell strange.

  4. QUESTION:
    varicose veins?
Hi there! I have a question for any ladies that have varicose veins on their calves. I have had these varicose veins on the back of my leg for quite some time now and they looked like they were protruding from the skin. Now, the puffiness is gone and they are flush with my skin. I fully intend on going to the doc, I was just wondering if anyone else has had this happen and knows what causes it. I am worried that they have burst or something.
At times, the back half of my leg will feel tight and sometimes goes numb. Also, my baby will fall asleep on me and in order to stand up while holding her, I will push myself up using just my legs. Could I have done something to the veins by doing that? Thanks for your help.

    • ANSWER:
No, they haven't burst. I had the same thing happen to some of mine (pity it couldn't have been all of them) and I checked with the doctor. He told me that sometimes they just become less engorged, and sort of deflate - but that it was nothing to worry about unless there was pain in that area.

As long as your have no pain or heat in the area that the varicose veins were, you don't need to stress - but see your doctor to make sure.

      I hope this helped...

  6. QUESTION:
Leg pain after giving birth to my daughter....?
I don't even know how to ask this question, because its kind of hard to describe; I can only hope that someone knows what this might be. I am 22 years old I gave birth to my first child on Aug.28th....during the pregnancy I gained a normal amount of weight ( 25 pounds...all of which I have now lost)...I now weigh 170 and am 5'7. During the pregnancy I also got a ton of stretch marks....on my legs, thighs, stomach, butt, sides....pretty much ever lower extremity is covered...and I have recently noticed broken blood vessels....spider veins I guess you could call them, all over the outer side of my thigh. And there is this area on both legs that slightly protrudes a little and hurts really bad if I put pressure on it. When I look at it it looks like I have a bunch of cluster of broken blood vessels. Is there a condition that I might have that causes this? What can be done about it? I am slightly over weight....would losing another 10 -15 pounds help?

    • ANSWER:
What you have is varicose veins, and probably have some deep ones you can't see well. It's a problem pregnant women have been plagued with for eons, and unfortunately not a lot you can do about them. When you are pregnant, the blood supply naturally increases to be able to provide oxygen and nutrients to the developing baby. Your circulatory system is a closed pipe system though- and can only increase in diameter so much. It's sort of like trying to add in an extra cup to a gallon pitcher. Well, sometimes the veins just can't take it and they bulge out. If it's near the surface, you get to see them. Fortunately most will reduce after the baby delivers. Most, but not always all of them. The area around a varicose vein can burn, itch or be painful. Most will calm down within 3-4 months of delivery, though. If they don't, then your regular doctor can advise you on more permanent solutions. You can help things by wearing support hose, keeping your legs elevated as much and as often as you can, and yes- by losing some of the weight may help. You want to watch the diet so it's lower in salt, so water retention isn't as much a problem. Avoid sitting or standing in one position for extended periods of time as well, and try some exercise where you move the legs- walking or swimming are excellent. Don't sit with your legs crossed either. You should also stick to low heel shoes, not high heels. The calf muscles should be kept in the relaxed position as much as possible, so check out the pumps to be sure the heels are low enough for that. I also warn you that pregnancy will aggrivate them, and those you don't see now may become more visible. The old ones may also return with a vengence. Since you know now you are prone to them, you will want to take extra precautions while pregnant again- like wearing flats and support hose from the start. Unfortunately the tendency is genetic as well- so you can always fuss at your mom! Sorry dear, it's one of the prices you pay for the dear little one.

  7. QUESTION:
    Blue veins on my shins?
Erg, k so I have this really ugly blue vein that runs diagonally down my shin- it's not protruding at all like a varicose vein but it's really ugly still. And I'm starting to see one faintly on my other shin too! It is so unsightly! I'm only seventeen and it sucks. Like I used to love my legs and I'm really fit but now I just don't even want to wear shorts anymore. What can I do? Like, they don't look like varicose veins or spider veins, so what is it?

Treating New Proud Flesh on Slightly Deep Leg Wound?
So my mare cut her leg open, in kind of a bad place.
It's on the inside of her rear right leg, across the cannon, right where that big blood vein crosses over.

I had been wrapping it, because it was really SO exposed at first--I'm not sure how she managed not to slice that vein open
    First day:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v329/mewjet18/?action=view&current=utf-8BSU1HMDA1MjUuanBn.jpg
    Second day:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v329/mewjet18/Sugars%20Injury%207%2005%2009/?action=view&current=utf-8BSU1HMDA1NDguanBn.jpg

We had the vet out, he gave us antibiotics, suggested cold-water therapy and changing the bandage for a few more days, then putting on a non-stick pad and thick layers of gauze and doing a pressure wrap, and leaving it on for up to 7 days in a row.

So I kept doing what I had been doing (water therapy and changing the bandage daily), then tried what he said. I left the first one on for 3 days, and took it off yesterday.

There was a BIG glob of drainage (the non-stick pad wasn't absorbing it or letting the wound dry out), and after I washed it off, she had a decent amount of newly-grown proud flesh in the wide area of her wound around that blood vessel.

So obviously, the pressure-wrap idea to prevent proud flesh wasn't working. So we called him, and he suggested we could use some caustic powder/Wonder Dust

But I wanted to wrap the wound just a little longer, until there was some real granulation around that huge vein---because she's an accident-prone 5 year old OTTB mare, and I KNOW she'll do something to it as soon as I leave the wrap off.
(The first day, it had been smothered with bad shavings, and I was even afraid the shavings might have gotten up inside it---but luckily they didn't.)

There wasn't much proud flesh yet, it wasn't protruding out of the wound, but it definitely had the bubbly/bleedy look of it.
(I didn't get any pictures yesterday though.)
She's in a really good place right now though. We managed to keep it from getting infected, there's no more swelling, and only a tiny bit of heat right around proud flesh spot.

What should I do to get rid of the proud flesh?
I read around online, should I just leave it open anyway and go for the Wonder Dust?
Or could I possibly put wonder dust on, let it dry out for a bit, then wrap it with an actual dry wrap?
Any other remedies anyone can suggest?
Or is that a bad idea?

    • ANSWER:
Formation of granulation tissue is part of the normal healing process. It is when it overgrows the margins of the wound that it is called proud flesh, since by protruding it prevents epithelial cells from migrating across to complete the healing process and to inhibit formation of more granulation tissue.

My opinion on the treatment of proud flesh differs from that of your your vet in that I would not use caustics to treat proud flesh, and Wonder dust is a caustic. It will not only destroy the proud flesh, but also all of the healthy tissue. It can backfire and lead to worsening of the condition by slowing healing and even encouraging infection.

The best treatment for proud flesh is surgical excision. It is easy for your vet to just use a scalpal to cut it away. No anesthesia is needed since there are no nerve endings in proud flesh.

Often a vet will combine steroids with antibiotics to topically treat a wound that is forming exuberant granulation tissue, which makes more sense than using caustics. A combination of surgical excision and steroid/antibiotic application is what I would discuss with the vet, and I would hold off on using the caustic agent. Wrapping is still debated as to whether or not it limits or promotes proud flesh, but if the wound needs protection from contamination, I would probably at least wrap it with non stick gauze and Kling wrap, and use elastikon tape to secure it. But again, this would be after having my vet excise the proud flesh and determine the topical treatment to use.

  9. QUESTION:
Mark on leg that changes shape and doesn't go away?
My 7 yr. old daughter has had a tiny mark on her leg that hasn't went away (it's been about 6 months) and actually changes appearance. Sometimes it looks like a reddish/brownish line, sometimes like 2 dots from a staple, and sometimes it protrudes. The last time it protruded I made a dermatoligist appointment for her, but by they time we got in to see the Dr. it was already flat again. The dermatologist said she didn't know what it was and that perhaps it was a varicose vein that had went away on it's own. Well, now it started protruding again and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas to what it could be? Thanks!!!

    • ANSWER:
Take a photo of it with you to the doctors. Make sure you place your hand or a ruler in the photo, to show the dimensions. If you could get a front view and a side view would also be helpful, as we can't tell how far something is protruding until we look at it from the side.
      Good luck.

  11. QUESTION:
How do Jehovah's witnesses upbuild each other?
Do they do it by back stabbing and such?
Please read another question I posed and you'll understand:What is respect for jehovah- when wearing a skirt to the Kingdom hall?
My wife is 47yrs old and has borne 4 lovely daughters, consequently she has various veins that are slightly protruded. If she tans her legs the veins largely dissappear from sight or aren't that obvious- so I encourage he as much as I can to get sun to them.
Yesterday she wore a skirt that comes 3.5 inches above her knees and 6-7 inches below her gusset- to the kingdom hall, as she'd a 30 minute walk there and back. Two of her sisters (my wife is babtised) went to an elder and complained, the elder then pointed out the error of my wifes ways.
My wife had already felt conscious as she sat down because the skirt got shorter when seated and so took what the elder said as being appropriate.
What I don't understand about the congregation is that they regularly have attendance by ladies full of 'BLING' and very much 'SHOWING OF THE FLESH'. As a man my attention is diverted when women are sat all around me with bare arms, backs and sometimes 'LOTS OF CLEAVAGE', and it isn't just the young women- some of the older ones (40-50 age range, like my wife) are worst- its as though this age range feel safe from mens unwanted attention.
Now I'm all for showing Jehovah respect and my wife has admitted fault BUT:
Was it really necessary for the ladies to speak to an elder and ask him to humiliate my wife- surely as 'SISTERS' they would have been better showing a little 'LOVE' by speaking discretely with my wife? Isn't it disrespectful to do things with maliscious intent whilst anywhere- never mind in a kingdom hall?
Is the elder at fault for not asking the 'Sisters' to speak discretely themselves about the issue- after all he knew my wife would feel humiliated before him?
As an unbabtised husband, do I have the right to photograph the congregation as they walk in and print all those with Bling and flesh showing on the net- depicting them all as showing 'NO RESPECT FOR JEHOVAH'?
I really do feel this congregation are being hypocrytical yet again I've known elders lie (one came to his senses and admitted it- the other has still never conceded the fact- 15yrs later), I've seen all the flesh showing and the bling AND I've known babtised witnesses behave worse than I have.

What do you all think and should these women have shown Jehovah respect themselves by at least showing my wife a little consideration?
5 hours ago - 1 week left to answer.
    Additional Details
As always- the witnesses seem to avoid apologising in any form and hope their discretions are swept under the carpet- why can't they be big enough to do the right thing for once and own up to their mistakes?

I'm sorry to break it to you my man, but JW's are the most disingenuous, loathsome, two-faced, hypocritical, detestable sect out there. They have changed their stance so many times it's laughable, treat members as property rather than people, and demonstrate utterly contemptible morals whilst maintaining an illusion of moral high ground. • ANSWER:
Gary - I understand your frustrations. This was a sensitive situation which should have been handled better. The sisters in your KH should not have approached an elder to speak to your wife, they should have had the sense to realise that it would cause her (needless) embarassment. A better solution would have been for a mature sister to have a discreet word with your wife (or yourself as her husband, and subsequently in a better position to caution her about wearing short skirts) rather then make a meal out of it bu running to the elders.

I understand too that it seems very hypocritical for your wife to be counseled, when others in the KH wear worse attire.
In my KH, there are several sisters in their 20's who always wear skimpy clothes, even backless dresses, and "halter necks" (tie around the neck style) tops that draw attention to their bodies and cleavages. Some seem to think that because it's the summer and its hot weather, that allows them to dress as if they're at the beach.

Please keep in mind that no one in this world, including Witnesses, are perfect and humble, and we all "stumble many times".
Sometimes situations aren't handled correctly, and sometimes feelings are hurt. I can attest to that.
Remember each one of us "must render an account" to Jehovah for our actions.

The best thing for you to do, if you can't let it go, would be to approach the elder who counseled your wife, inform him of you and your wife's hurt feelings and express your opinion that the situation wasn't handled with tact or sensitivity, and see what his reaction will be.

I apologise on behalf of some of our tactless brothers and sisters, but it can and will happen as long as we're imperfect human beings who live in a difficult and stressful world.

  13. QUESTION:
do horses' lips quiver when they're nervous?
my horse gets insanely nervous around new people. he's very distrusting and quite "shy". i wanted to get some video of me & my horse, so my parents came to watch me ride yesterday. my horse's lip quivered the ENTIRE time, until about 2 minutes after they left (no exaggeration). also, his vein in his neck was pulsing and his veins in his face and legs were both very...protruding? ALSO, lol, i only rode him for about 20 minutes and he was pretty sweaty. i rode him an hour of probably 90% trotting, 5% cantering, and 5% walking the day before, no sweat. it was warmer yesterday, but definitely not hot. it was probably 50. he used to do a leg stomping thing around new people, but that seems to have stopped. do you thing this is his new nervous habit, or is this something else?

    all comments/opinions/etc welcome! thank you.
oh and i should add, it isn't the kind of quiver like when i scratch his butt haha. it was more of shaking. both nostrils and lips were shaking.

    • ANSWER:
My gelding does this when he's REALLY scared. He has these panic attacks sometimes. His whole body shakes, though... I don't know if I've ever seen just his lips shaking.

Whenever my mare's nervous she wiggles her upper lip side to side really quickly. She only does it on my arm, though... like if I'm holding her while she's getting her shots, she puts her nose on my arm and wiggles her lip on it. Or if I'm leading her towards something that's scaring her, she does it. I think that's more of a nervous habit, though... like biting your fingernails.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably just an involuntary reaction (like shaky hands). Just try to comfort him when he's doing it, and he should get over it eventually. Be glad he has a harmless nervous reaction, and not a bad one like bolting.

  14. QUESTION:
What is the use of the Discs in our back ?
Cause I have Disc problem in my back. It's like one disc in my lower back partially protruded and is pressing on veins going to right leg leading me to sciatica. And a Neurosurgeon advised us to go through a surgery and take the disc out. So, is it going to create any kind of problem when one of my disc in my lower back will be out of my back ???

What is the exact use of the Discs in our backs ? If they are of no use then why are they there ?
I'm 23 years old guy from India.

    • ANSWER:
Snap! except my sciatica is in the left leg. I work in a job where this problem is quite common. I have several friends with it. Some have had the operation you are talking about.

The discs act as a cushion. They absorb impact and help with spine flexibility. If you had the whole lot removed, you would become very inflexible. Just removing one is not a big problem. I'm a paramedic, as are my colleagues who have had it done. They manage to continue with their life and work perfectly well after the disc removal. There will be slightly less flexibility and you may well have to think about lifting and posture more than you did before but if the pain level is extreme, the operation is worthwhile.

I haven't had it done because they ay mine isn't severe enough yet. I have to keep plodding on with daily pain killers. If the neurosurgeon is recommending it and the pain is damaging your quality of life, I would suggest getting it done.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

  15. QUESTION:
What is wrong with me? What specialist should I see?
For many years I have lived with pain. My veins protrude and hurt. It actually feels like the blood hurts. This happens in my arms, legs, hands, and feet. I have elevated sed rate. I see a neurologist and rheumatologist. The best they have come up with is Fibromyalgia. I have Temperal Lobe Epilepsy, Hypothyroidism, and Asthma. My daughter has similar symptoms and has been diagnosed with Restless Legs Syndrome. By the way, we both have hemoglobin D trait (I don't know if this might have anything to do with it). Now they are mentioning a possible blood disorder. Help!!!

    • ANSWER:
I don't know how close you live to a medical school, but there should be a super-specialist hematologist who could possibly help you with the possible blood disorder. I have 2 bleeding disorders and one clotting disorder, and there are a couple of hematologists I have seen in my local area who are clueless about my bleeding disorders, even though one is THE most common one (vonWillebrand's Disease or Syndrome). These two were board certified in hematology.

So, I drive for over an hour to see the super-specialist who is on the faculty of a medical school, as well as seeing patients. This medical facility has started a coordinated care program, so please ask about that kind of program. Coordinated care, in their case, means specialists in all of the fields for which you are treated (from that facility, or it is too much to 'coordinate') meet and review your case. They may all want to see you, or they may wish to examine your records.

It sounds to me as if you would be perfect for this kind of treatment protocol, as you certainly seem to need coordination amongst your specialists.

I know it can be very frustrating to deal with all of these issues. Some doctors don't even take you seriously, I'm guessing. Please know that I am thinking all the best for you and I hope that your find some answers. It isn't so easy, is it?

  16. QUESTION:
My body is going crazy on me!?
I'm a 31 year old mother of 4 children. I'm active. I run around chasing everyone and take them to the zoo, walk to school, and up until 2 months ago worked out regularly. We moved (again) and my life is in upheaval right now - living in a small apartment while we find a house, 7 year old is going in for another serious surgery. Needless to say I wonder if it could just be stress but here's what's happening.

It started with tingling in my toes then it turned to pain, then the same in my hands. I've researched peripheral neuropathy and it sounds similar except there are other symptoms like often a heavy feeling in my right arm or my right leg. I naturally have a lot of visable veins in my hands but they seem to protrude even more and hurt sometimes. I'll get strange pains in my legs that last a few seconds but reoccur over and over for a few hours. Sometimes it will just be pain in one finger or toe as if I'd just been stung by a bee or a bruising feeling. The symptoms are just so erratic. I've had blood tests and everything shows normal. I worried about MS but my vision is fine. I have a list of about 30 possibilities. I just don't know where to start. My GP wants to send me to a neurologist, maybe I should just go, but it feels more like something to do with veins. I have vericose veins in my left leg from having kids but most of the issues are in the right side of my legs and arms. I'm going to try working out again and see if it can stop. I just don't know. Does anyone have any advice or experience to offer? Please help.

    • ANSWER:
      go to the neurologist first

  19. QUESTION:
Is this is a Midas Fly?
Unless you know something about insects, please don't answer.
Approx 1 1/4" long, black to dk. irredescent blue body. Antennae are orange and segmented. Mouthparts-outside are pincherl-like with a set of mouthparts that continually protrude in and out. The legs are black, long w/4 segments each. Barbs on second segment next to body and on the black feet. Eyes are oval shaped. There is no orange on top of the abdomen. The abdomen is slightly hairy. Two long wings with prominent veins. The area between the thorax and abdomen is extremely thin. Have seen a Midas Fly before a couple of years ago. This insect is much more stout and was easier to catch. Had a hard time chasing down the last one.
Just a simple yes or no answer isn't gonna get you points.

  20. QUESTION:
B&A: Critique this passage of mine?
William was out there somewhere, alone and afraid.

Carlie crept across the frost licked grass in only a nightgown, after she had crawled from the bedchambers' window. Her bare feet throbbed with each step from the mansion, as the night's breeze tugged at her gown. When the mansion's garden met looming trees, she hesitated, her legs trembling. Memories lapped against her. Carlie stood anchored to the spot, with the ghost of a beating against her back.

"A world without a sun is forbidden, you will be punished!" she could almost hear the elder's warning, but she denied their lure from the night. Thunder crackled in the distance, urging her into the forest.

She concentrated on her magic as if it were a part of her, a secret form of energy within her blood. She allowed it pulse to the rhythm of her heart. “Please, please, come home," she mentally called out to her cousin, forcing her thoughts into his head. A distant cry sounded from within the trees. She froze, amazed that it had worked. Another cry chimed with a howl of wind and she entered the forest.

Carlie continued to call to her cousin as she climbed, dodged, and weaved. Vines hung down in shaggy curtains from the towering trees above, throwing her into a tangle of green. She paused for a few moments to catch her breath, heavy from fear than anything else. Thorn bushes, branches, and protruding rock tore at her arms and legs, but William kept her moving.

Crunching leaves brought her to a halt.
“William?” she called to the darkness. A few silent seconds passed, and then a growl erupted from behind. She spun around to face three hunchbacked creatures, their spines visible beneath their rubbery, red skin. She choked back a scream, swallowing her panic.

The outsiders crawled forward, and an involuntary hiss ripped from her throat. The nearest creature took it as a challenge and lunged at her, bearing its teeth. Her moment of hesitation had cost her when it latched onto her wrist. She screamed as the venom in its fangs poured into her veins. She shoved it into the others and tried to steady herself, squeezing her bloody wound.

    • ANSWER:
This is very good. Very descriptive. I can see everything that’s going on, as if I’m experiencing it with her, so that right away pulls me in. A few minor criticisms listed below. Only other criticism is that we have none of her thoughts in here. You've given us her physical reactions, which is great and well done, but let us into her thoughts as well. How is she feeling throughout all of this? Let us see her fear, her yearning, etc. It will draw us more deeply into the character and gives us a reason to care for her.

Start a new paragraph here: Thunder crackled in the distance, urging her into the forest.

And here: A distant cry sounded from within the trees. She froze, amazed that it had worked. Another cry chimed with a howl of wind and she entered the forest.

The nearest creature MUST HAVE took it as a challenge, FOR IT lunged at her, bearing its teeth. –added the suggested words (in caps so you can see them, not shouting) to add clarification. I don’t know what POV you’re writing in, but it looks like third and in true deep third, she can’t know why that creature leapt at her, unless she can read his mind. If she CAN read his mind, you need to say so. If she can’t, then she can guess, but that means changing your wording to something along the lines of what I suggested.

She shoved it into the others and tried to steady herself, squeezing her bloody wound.—what is “It”. “it” is an elusive word that should be used sparingly, because it’s too vague. It can be anything. Being more specific gives strength to the sentence.

  21. QUESTION:
    Cat spaying gone wrong?
My female cat was spayed a few days ago and the resulting wound was not what I was led to expect from online research. Does anyone here know if this could be classified as a botched job? The cat is around 2 kgs and is very small. The incision is 2 inches and very ragged. There are 3 cross stitches which pucker up the cut and the ends of the wire are sticking out. The cat also has a shaved leg with a hole that looks like she had an IV in her vein. I knew she would have an incision in her side but not so big or protruding. Any advice?

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/moralanqua/picture_2.jpg
    The cat was not pregnant.

The pic is of the wound on same day as spaying.

    Wound not infected.

    • ANSWER:
Looking at the picture it is not were they would operate to spay your cat. You need to get that cat to a different vet and have it checked.
And you need to report this vet for he/she did a lousy job!
Nowadays your cat can be spayed and have stitches that will come out safely on its own.
Unless there was a problem your cat should not have had an IV so you need to talk to that vet and ask him/her the same questions you asked here.

  22. QUESTION:
Could You Please Critique This Chapter . Be Honest?
The plot has not been developed yet. I just wanted to describe the creation of the protagonist, a sort of picturesque novel. People here claimed it was boring as there was nothing but descriptions, but this is what I wanted to make. The decision to begin the novel with the discovery of his new body was something I could not compromised on. So please critique it as an imaginative world.

    Chapter One - Reborn

I had been completed; the cells in my limbs had joined together, clinging along the phalanges up my cranium. The veins climbed up the skeleton, like a stand-alone strand that came down the middle and other threads braided around it. They branched off the arms and ran all the way down to my thumbs. I stretched them out, feeling the blood flowing through my veins as it washed the dust away like an old book. The skin, my unctuous skin, had been revitalized, woven into microscopic pores across my skeleton and wrinkled at the elbow crooks as I bent my arms. It had puckered up around the wounds though I didn't remember having them.

It was like discovering my body anew. Any movement caught me off guard when I felt the soft texture of my skin running over the bones underneath, tickling me that I couldn't help chuckling. It was remarkable, why couldn't I feel it in my previous bodies? Was it a special one? Or I could feel it but being so accustomed to it that it felt weird now? No, it was impossible, even my subconscious confirmed it, but if it was me now. Where had I been?

The thin folded skin of my upper eyelid wrinkled up as if glue was smeared along the lower one. I struggled to open them away from each other. Suddenly, I had flipped up the lashes, and a source of sunlight penetrated through the cornea. But it was different this time, worse; it went all black and white, the unknown peeled the color off the outer space psychologically that it was just a monochrome now. Pieces of furniture spun around me, they moved so fast, they blurred like storm in a chaos of abstraction. Cracks broke through the surface as enormous lumps began to sprout out of it. The objects in the environment were being assimilated into my brain when the eye focused another image and got the required information: location, places, population. The amount was not important; I was just looking for existence, any sign of life. The faded colors splashed across the background as I blinked, crashing as waves against my new shell when the foam percolated down through the fissures in it, and painting the entire atmosphere.

My legs were like two trunks, solid as iron, slender as a deer's leg, embedded into the ground as the roots grew deeper beneath it, crawling like snakes on their abdomens and mounting on each others' spines as they spread across the autumnal leaves. I tried to lift them up off it, but I couldn't feel my phalanges clenching down into the sand as if they were amputated, magnetized to the ground that I had to shuffle my feet.

I was moving. My calves were stretched and lunged ahead, step after step as I balanced myself on the right foot and swung the left leg forward, heel to toe, heel to toe. I was marching robotically through the meadow, losing the gravity as the weight of my new body destabilized the steadiness when the left foot was off the ground. Somehow I managed to head myself forward as a fledgling that had just learned to fly, flapping the wings together as the feathers jutted out and assembled tightly closed to each other to force the air to flow around them and protruded up into it, thrust and lift, thrust and lift. After a few minutes I was gliding through the empty space like an eagle, fast as a spear spinning in the air as if I had been flying for an eternity, counteracting the gravity.

I ran a finger across my facial features as it fumbled a mysterious bone poking out in the center, flaking off the skin. I touched it, breathing in and out as a fresh air circulated through the two cavities beneath it. I plugged one up to examine it and realized it was harder to breathe now like someone wrapped his hands around my throat. I choked,it must be the aerial system, but why should I have it? An arrowhead stood out a half way against the sable color of my face.

    • ANSWER:
It's a really good start, I love the beginning. Just a little complaint, the wording is a little confusing, like where the character is trying to open his eyes, or when he's having trouble breathing. And the phalanges parts are weird, I think the story might flow better if you just say bones, toes or fingers. It just sounds better to me. But good luck, hope I helped!!!

And it wasn't boring at all!

Sorry, you get too carried away about a body- at first I thought you were describing a baby being born. I still dont understand it. I skipped past most of it because basically- I didnt want to read it. Who would want to read about someone discovering their body? Sorry, not my type.

  25. QUESTION:
So what do you think of this part of my book?
I suppose I’m running. My legs hurt, my heart rate is going a hundred miles an hour, and I’m in real need of water.
If I’m running, then I’m going nowhere. If I look ahead of me there is nothing but the same scenery. Red, cracked, dirt and a few pits of fire here and there. Yet, if I look behind me, I’m being chased.
These red yet fair skinned creatures are following me. Their eyes are a glowing red with cat shaped black pupils, horns protruding through their temples, and they are muscled. I mean really muscled. Twelve pack with veins and upon veins jutting out their skin.

What do you think? I know there are probably loads of grammatical errors in there but I'm not so hot at grammar and its my first ever attempt at writing a book.
That's just half of a dream she's having, and its the beginning of the book.

Should I be more detailed? Any tips are appreciated. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
it's pretty decent. good descriptions. try to change up your sentence lengths and not use slang like "and i mean really mustled", unless thats the direction you want to go with your book. Make sure as the speaker she sounds like a girl too. good luck!

  26. QUESTION:
I have dark purple lines on the inside of my thighs?
and they are on the insides of both legs. They go from the middle of my calves up my thighs all of the way to my womanly area, lol. I gained about 55lbs when I was pregnant and I had my daughter almost 3 1/2 months ago and I've gone from 175lbs to 133lbs. The lines aren't protruding and they don't hurt so they couldn't be varicose veins right? When I first wake up in the morning they are light but once I get moving around they turn dark purple.
That's what I'm trying to ask, what they are. I wasn't sure if they were stretchmarks or not because the stretchmarks I have on the rest of my body have faded and they aren't like this.

    • ANSWER:
      stretch marks?

  27. QUESTION:
    Female body builders: freakish anatomy?
Last night I went to the gym for the second time with my b/f. This will also be my last time. Seems that Wednesday night is "ladies (?) night" and this brings out the female body builders. I can not for the life of me understand the attraction: why would a woman want to have the veins popping out on her arms and legs? And why a man would enjoy seeing this?
Anyway, the biggest turnoff came later when I was changing in the ladies locker room. Is it normal for the female genitalia to protrude as is seems to with these women? I am NOT trying to be crude here, but the two women in the locker room had their clitoris and labia like pushing itself outward. While at 20 years of age I make no claim to have seen it all, this was new to me. It looked disgustingly deformed. What is that all about?
Moe, Steroids? Wowser! It is sooo unbelievably gross. I hate to bash them, but it looks like they are growing penis or something.

    • ANSWER:
MoeZ is right- they were on steroids. Yes, in a way, the excess testosterone was kinda turning them into men. Steroids make the clitoris enlarge, making it look like a penis. I do not understand the attraction either.

  28. QUESTION:
I need some help with a fallen godling (minor god) who was turned into an immortal monster.?
If his eyes were plucked out by his father and the empty eye sockets were set aflame with black fire would his monstrous form have hundreds of eyes? Does the monstrous form fit with the humanoid/human? What can I can I do to improve his history? What else should his history have?
Human Form: He looks like an extraordinarily tall decrepit frightening looking human-like male that stands nine feet tall. His wings are charred down to the bone. Black, glowing veins run throughout the withered skin that is mottled green and blue-violet. Thick monstrous segmented horns start at the front of his hairline and move over his head, to the back of his skull where they extend outward, curl, and come to a point. He has a wild mane of coarse silver-grey hair. His gaunt face is hideously ugly. The large eyes flicker with black fire. The jagged iron teeth in his misshapen mouth are yellow in color. The hands are large and gnarled. The five feet long tail is forked, splitting into two smaller tails after the first foot of length. Both hands have five fingers and a thumb that have an extra joint. A sharp crimson claw comes out each hand’s five fingers and thumb.
Monstrous Form: He is a huge creature that towers thirteen feet in height. His is thickly muscled body is covered in mottled sickly yellow-green chitinous plates. His huge oval head is bestial in appearance and low slung between his shoulders. The horizontal axis of the head is the longest. The back corners of his skull have an enormous pair of backward-pointing spikes that are six inches long; these are surrounded by three smaller spikes. The ears resemble the wings of a bat. In the center of his forehead is a shining star. The large eyes flicker with black fire. His long heavy powerful jaws are rimmed with six inches long razor sharp tusk-like teeth. Curving out from both sides of the neck is a set of four horns which protect the neck and shoulder. Six nightmarish looking tentacles protrude from his back. The tentacles split at the end, into three radial “fingers.” On both shoulder is large eye that is the same color as the eyes on his head. The arms end in serrated blades of bone shaped like the claws of a praying mantis. The serpentine tail is prehensile and measures five feet in length. The legs resemble the hind legs of a powerful predatory creature. Each large foot has six toes with an extra joint. Each toe ends in a large thick crimson claw.
History: He was kicked out of Thor because he killed his twin sister and mother. In front of the rest of the pantheon he belonged to, his father forced his evil to manifest. His father said “Reveal your evil self to ever one present my son.” After that he turned from a beauty looking godling into an ugly monster. First his arms turned into nightmarish tentacles that reach almost to the ground. Next black, glowing veins appeared and they ran throughout the skin which become withered and mottled green and blue-violet in. After he was finished changing, his eyes were plucked out by his father and the empty eye sockets were set aflame with black fire. Finally his father scorched his wings so that they are now charred down to the bone.

  29. QUESTION:
I have a hard lump like the size of a big meat ball in the front of my neck. Is this a cause of alarm?
I have a hard lump on a bit left side of my neck that moves when I talk, swallow, or sing. It is growing slowly. This is the third year since I first noticed it when I looked at myself on the mirror. Wonder if it should be a cause of alarm. It is about three times bigger now from the very first time I noticed it three years ago. I really do not know when it was there because I get lumps here and there and they disappear. But this particular lump has not disappeared. It became harder and larger and rounder. It is like having an Adam's apple slightly to the left.

It is now about double my thumb size. Get to think of it, it may have grown four times bigger from the first time I saw it three years ago.

The lump is on my thyroid. I believe this because it is located on the near center front of my neck -- slightly left from where an Adam's Apple should be. I saw several pictures on my researches about that exact location/spot. It is definitely not within the lymphatic system.
I know those little soft lumps that the lymphatic system create that moves about from place to place especially when I have a cold, allergies, and some hair spray on my hair. When these are gone, the nodes disappear, too.

But this particular nodule I have on my thyroid, is growing by the millimeter. It is protruding outward like an Adam's apple and it is round like a huge grape or a small plum. It is a hard mass. Only moves as I swallow, talk or sing just like how an Adam's apple would move.

I still feel well though. Other than having regular bleeding left nose and having constant swollen lower legs (feet, ankles and calves) when I sit more than 20 minutes without moving, I am fine. I have to keep my legs up whenever I sit or lie down to avoid the inflammations. Now, I have frequent tingling and burning feeling inside my arms, legs, shoulders. Sometimes, I have numb feeling on my entire head and a piercing pain on a single vein on my head (somewhere side top portion to the back portion of the head). And sometimes, I have my entire back feeling the tingling - burning and numbness. When pressed to the bones, the bone and nerves hurt. I do not like to be massaged because pressing on my back aches.

I have a family filled with cancer. My father's siblings: 4 out of 6 have/had cancer. Two are dead. One is leukemia and one from breast cancer. The other two are male who are still alive. My father has prostate cancer and my uncle has thymus cancer. On my mother's side, one out of three siblings have cancer. My aunt (sister of my mom) has breast cancer and still living.

Go see your doctor. Even if its totally benign, it'll give you some good piece of mind. Particularly with your family history. I've had small, soft, lymph fluid build up on my neck before but those bumps are usually small and go away within a few days and aren't ever bigger than a quarter. I say anything bigger than that or that sticks around longer than a few days warrants a trip to the doctor. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck, for your sake I hope its nothing.

  30. QUESTION:
Purple lump on inner thigh that bleeds?
First, I've noticed that I had developed what looked like purplish stretch marks on my inner thigh, which decended from my groin and downward, vertically. I had developed them about four years ago, as far as I know, which would coincide with some significant weight gain. I had been to Iraq and weighed 165, but shot up to 180 in a month or two since my metabolism must have been temporarily screwed over by my limited diet while overseas. I am back to my normal weight, but the "stretch marks" remain.

Anyway, I like to check myself every now and then to check for signs of STD's, and make sure everything is in order down there. I even check the crease where my legs meet my groin, and behind around my testicles, since I am aware that crap can develop in those areas as well.

So, I had lifted my leg up onto the counter of my bathroom, and noticed a large lump on my inner thigh. As I did that, it must have ruptured it, since I started to bleed profusely. It wasn't spraying out, but it had expelled a similar amount of blood as though I had cut my face shaving. You know, a lot of blood, but not on an emergency level.

Anyway, this lump is soft to the touch, and is along my stretch marks, aand is slightly more purple than the stretch marks. It's ovular in shape, and is about a centimeter long horizontally, and half as thick. It seems to protrude about 1/3 of a centimeter. In addition, this lump is about an inch from the crease in my groin. I was pressing it, and it felt very soft, and almost seemed as though it were an obscenely swollen vein. There was no pain from it, although there was a slight discomfort as I squeezed some blood out of it. I wouldn't have known it was there if I hadn't of checked.

It doesn't look like any kind of STD that I've heard of. If it were, the only thing it would likely be is a wart; however, it seems like a blood-filled lump, that's slightly purple. Could it have been caused by leg friction? Does anyone have any idea whatsoever as to what it might be? Obviously I could go to a doctor, but I'm uninsured and would like to have at least a vague idea of what it might be before going that route.

    Vericose Vein Question?
My left leg has always been a bit more veiny--more blue veins, then my other leg,but I am currently 5 months pregnant and I am noticing in the area right above and also right below my knee (same connected vein) that their are two seperate protruding little bulges in the vein, I am under the impression these are referred to as vericose veins and can be common in pregnancy, however my question is...1.) should I be bringing this to the attn. of my Dr?? 2.) are they dangerous? 3.)has anyone else had these & what was the outcome? i know the internet is a scary place to look things up--but sometimes that feels like our only option and i have read a few scary stories including DEATH stories related to vericose veins and blood clots, and I am slighlty worried!!!!!

    • ANSWER:
You should mention this to your doctor, but they are not dangerous.
Vericose veins are swollen veins due to back up of blood in the legs. Veins bring blood back to the heart. In the upper thighs are big veins called femoral veins. When a woman is pregnant, the uterus can put pressure on the femoral vein and reduce the amount of blood that can get back to the heart. The excess blood stays in the legs and the veins swell to make room.
Your doctor will probably give you advice to help reduce the vericose veins. This might include elevating your legs more often or wearing compression stockings (tight fitting knee-high or thigh-high stockings that help return blood from the legs to the heart).

  33. QUESTION:

    Thanks,
    All the best :)

    • ANSWER:
are you sure it is varicose veins and not spider veins? varicose veins are usually very large and pronounced. see attached of for interesting article about varicose veins and treatment. Broken capillaries usually happen on your face not your legs.usually caused by rosacea, sun damage, hormonal shfts, etc.
