  1. QUESTION:
Ruptured varicose vein behind knee PHOTO?
I don't know if it is def a varicose vein that ruptured or not. When I was pregnant, I had a fairly large and noticeable varicose vein in the back of my left leg. From where the bruise is, it made me guess that maybe the varicose vein ruptured?

About a week ago, I noticed that it was really painful behind me knee... my husband noticed that it was swollen and red... a little bruised. Now a week later... this is what it looks like...

Tiny, dark spider veins on thighs & large varicose veins behind my knees, any treatment besides surgery??
I'm sick of my spider veins, and as I'm getting older, they are progressively getting worse!! (I'm only 27) I would still like to wear shorts in the summer, but it has gotten really bad :( Is there anything I can do to hide them, or fade them, perhaps? I know there's surgery procedures, but that is only if they are hurting or bulging...etc. Thank God I'm not at that stage, yet..!? Maybe any pill I can take, I DUNNO! I have pale, thin skin as well, so in fact, ANY vein throughout my body shows, and it's embarassing. (especially behind my knees...) Any suggestions would really help. Thanks

  3. QUESTION:
can surgery remove a large varicose vein located behind the knee of your left leg?
can surgery or injections remove spider veins on the same leg only located next to the knee cap forever...never to come back again....

    • ANSWER:
From the research I have done the veins can re surface. However there is a type of injection they can use that basically shrinks the vessel and makes it non-functional. My concern with that was how much pressure would be placed on the other vessels having to pass the extra volume of blood. Go on line and look up Thrombosis and Spider veins. You may get some better answers. GOOD LUCK!

  5. QUESTION:
Is there anything i can do for my varicose veins?
im 29 yrs old and since i was pregnant with my 1st child i started getting varicose veins behind my knees at the back of my legs, now nearly 4 yrs later they have started to stick out, and i get "dead legs" all the time, i visited my gp who didn't seem interested and told me there was nothing he could do as it is purely cosmetic!, i have started to get little red split veins all over my legs now and there is a big clump of them nr my knee area, is this related to the varicose veins? is there anything i can do to sort them out? or do i have to live with this? thanks in advance x

    • ANSWER:
My sister is a nurse in trainig and she told me that in a clinic she worked they reccomended flight socks for varicose veins. I suffer with them to thanx to my job, so have tried it out. Varicose veins are to do with circulation and flight socks are ment to help. Also try and elevate your legs, use a couple of pillows under your feet when you strech out on the sofa.

  6. QUESTION:
    Painful Varicose Veins?
My husband has a horribly big varicose vein behind his knee. He has been complaining of really bad pain in that area. He is a tough guys so I know it must be bad for him to complain about it. Sometimes it is so painful he can barely walk. I am trying to get him to the doc but he is stubborn. Anyone heard or seen anything like this before? If he reads this maybe he will go.

    • ANSWER:
Insist he go to the doctor!!! He could have peripheral vascular disease or thrombophlebitis. He could have a blood clot that could break free and travel to his lungs, killing him! Better safe than sorry! Go to the doctor and ask that they order a venous doppler of his leg!!!!!!!!

  7. QUESTION:
I have pain behind my knee & under the kneecap, its worse in the evening could this just be varicose veins?

    • ANSWER:
If the knee joint is not properly in place, you will have discomfort after being actively using it during the day. It applies pressure to the cartilage and forces it out of its normal position. This will cause some degree of swelling within the joint itself. Thus the pain or discomfort. Until that edema reduces.

It may be advisable to check more closely how you are walking, to force this slight displacement of the joint and adjoining bones of the upper and lower leg. Should you notice any rotation of the foot, when kicking off (while walking) you will understand why there is an irritation to the area. Any hard soled shoes will reveal a circular pattern on the sole of the shoe. This indicates you need to be much more aware of how you are walking or even become aware of one hip being further forward than the other. Not an uncommon finding.

Should you not be able to correct this problem by observation and retraining of your walking habits, perhaps you would consider visiting a doctor of Chiropractic and have the necessary corrections instituted.

  8. QUESTION:
Varicose veins, or are they puffy because I just walked?
I walk briskly for about an hour+ a day, for exercise and relaxation purposes. Well, sometimes, I notice this one little vein that puffs out a little ways, and its in the shin area, right along the Tibia bone. Its the color of my skin.

Theres another vein thats poking out a little (puffy, I mean they look like they are maybe the beginning stages of varicose veins) on my knee, just below it, again right on the bone area. This puffy vein is skin colored also.

There is yet another puffy vein behind the knee, in the crease, where my dark blue veins are, and this particular one is dark blue colored, but all my back of the knee veins are blue, anyways. I have seen a couple of the ones in the shin area, before tonight, but never saw the knee frontal one until tonight, and then the one in the posterior of my knee, I never considered looking for, in the past. I also have a couple of veins that are skin colored on my ankles that are puffy but skin colored. I am 32, I get stretch marks and scar easily, but have youthful skin, and am only about 15 pounds overweight. OK I am 5'3" and weigh 160, but I fit into a size 9-11 jeans, and know people who are the same height as me, or even taller, that weigh 20 pounds less than I do, and wear size 13-14-'s, so I am in damned good shape, anyways, but have been a little up and down with my weight lately- so idk.

    Question is here-
    1. Are these veins puffier right after you do exercise or walk fast for a while?

    2. If I look at them tomorrow, do you think they will be less noticeable?

    3. And, is this a symptom of heart disease? My dad died of advanced heart disease.

    4. Does losing weight reduce the chances of getting varicose veins??

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
      1. Yes. I don't have them, but my mother does, and hers always 'inflate' when she's on her feet a lot.

      2. They may go down a lot, they may not. It depends on the person.

      3. I've never heard anything about them being linked to heart disease, but I don't think so.

      4. No. My mom is 5' 8" and 120 lbs., yet her veins are very noticeable. I believe the only way to reduce their visibility is by surgery.

  9. QUESTION:
My legs ache at night, especially behind the knees & down to the arches of my feet.?
Sometimes I find it hard to fall asleep or I will wake up in the middle of the night. I am not sure if this is caused by 'restless leg syndrome' or I also have varicose veins behind my knees. Any suggestions/ exercises to alleviate the pain will be appreciated. Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Could be a potassium dificency. See your docotor but in the mean time try eating more potassium rich foods like bannas and green leavey vegtables.

  10. QUESTION:
    Varicose Veins?
Can anyone explain the aches and pains associated with varicose veins? I have them behind both of my knees and i am experiencing cramps in my knees and achy lower legs. i just had a baby in may so that may contribute to it according to the websites that i researched. Any feedback is helpful

    • ANSWER:
varicose veins are caused when the valves in the veins are under pressure and they struggle to prevent the backflow of blood (which is their normal job), so the veins become distended with the backlog of blood, which is what causes the ache. elevating your legs will help ease the pressure and if you put on support stockings or support tights before you get out of bed, you should be much more comfortable. try not to cross your legs when sitting down as that can make them worse. they often appear during pregnancy, as your circulating blood volume increases . hope this helps

  11. QUESTION:
I'm working on my feet alot and the back of my legs hurt (behind my knees ) is this varicose veins starting?

    • ANSWER:
I can't tell by your name if you are a guy or girl, but wearing really good support pantyhose helps alot. It helps prevent vericose veins and keps your legs from getting tired so fast.

  12. QUESTION:
    Question about varicose veins?
I just noticed what looks like the start of varicose veins behind one of my knees, so I looked up prevention online only to find out that the only recommendation is to avoid prolonged periods of standing and remain seated as much as possible. Because of this, I think this unwanted appearance of vein is due to a job I just started a couple months ago---which requires me to stand for my entire shift omitting a 15 min break. How is sitting down more beneficial to my health than being up and active? Humans are supposed to be mobile! It seems to me that sitting would make the problem worse due to stagnation of the blood. What are some more reasonable prevention methods for varicose veins, or even natural remedies (I'm not doing surgery so don't even suggest it)? I'm a vegetarian, so if there are any dietary suggestions, no meat. Should I wear a particular sort of shoe or insert in my shoe? I'm already wearing heel cushions since I just have trendy shoes, not athletic ones (though I plan to buy some tennis shoes when I have spare money). I do yoga and pilates, so is there any pose or exercise I should add to my routine?
Much better recommendations than the websites I've looked at. I work at a cash register, so sometimes moving around can be difficult, but I can figure some sort of inconspicuous exercises to do when business is slow.

    • ANSWER:
I've heard that panty hoes are supposed to be beneficial in prevention. Cause of varicose veins is valve incompetency in the vein so blood gets backed up dilating the vessel and making it more visible... the reason standing for long periods is hard on them is because it increases pressure in your legs. Adding something like panty hoes will apply external pressure to help counter act some of the external pressure ;) you may also be interested in vitamin A,C,E and mineral selenium for antioxidant help. C will also help in collagen repair and maybe some Cu2+ which is supposed to add more elasticity to arteries and veins. Oh and moving around more will help if you are just standing in one place.... moving cause muscles to contract that aid in the evacuation of blood from the extremities reducing pooling and thereby vein pressure! hope that helps some!

  13. QUESTION:
22 Years old with varicose veins? Is this common? 10 points best answer?
Hi I am a healthy 22 year old female. I was concerned about varicose veins. I see a particular vein right behind my knee area that sometimes looks "bulging" and sometimes no. Now heres a lil backround info:

  15. QUESTION:
What is the best compression stocking on the market for varicose vein and cellulite reduction?
I am not sure which one to buy because I have searched on the internet and found two different ones that seem like they might work. One from UK by John Lewis, and one from Italy by Solidea. I don't just have cellulite, but also varicose veins behind my knees and spider veins on my calves and feet. I am a 29 yr/old female at the proper weight for my height. I have tried weight lifting, cardio, spa suits and still have these ailments. I know it may be hereditary, but I really would like to be able to wear shorts this summer. I developed this problem after having a still birth 10 years ago and haven't been able to afford any medical treatment so I was hoping someone might know if these compression stockings would help? I would prefer and appreciate advice from someone who has tried these types of products or has patients that had success with them. Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
The US brands Sigvaris and Jobst are good.

They help with the discomfort from varicose veins but do nothing for cellulite. Nothing really does.

Good compression stockings are expensive. Think around USD a pair.

If that's too much move down a notch in price/quality.

    • ANSWER:
I wanted to share that using the herb Butcher’s Broom is an absolutely wonderful cure for varicose veins! I have been taking a supplement for 3 weeks and my legs are 100% pain free! The ugly varicose/spider veins are also starting to disappear! I was in tremendous pain with these veins in my right leg during my 6th pregnancy and having a very difficult time walking or standing. With 3 months left to go I figured I better find some way to get through a little more comfortably. I ran across this herb and with my doctor’s approval have been taking it with GREAT success! I noticed improvement in my pain on the first day! Check into it! I'm guessing it would be great to help prevent the problem also. Make sure you check with your doctor first...especially if you have elevated blood pressure.

  21. QUESTION:
Varicose Veins that pop out on right leg, chest pain, hard to breathe, doctors say not a blood clot? Help?
Recently I saw that I had thick popped out varicose veins on my right leg, behind my knee that stick out. They hurt and tingle, and there is a weird stabbing feeling in the area.

Also, I found out I also have a herniated disk in my lower back, and the pain shoots down all the way down to my right leg. Same leg as the veins.

I have had chest pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness the past few days, and my veins pop in and out.

I've been to doctor, even the ER, They have done an ultrasound on my leg to check for a clot a few weeks ago, they didn't find one.

I have been having horrible abdominal pain. I have fatty liver, and a urinary trac infection.

I can't seem to find out why I can't breathe, why I have chest pain, and why I'm so dizzy.

    Help? Will choose best answer.

Is this all in my head? My mom thinks I'm paranoid. I have anxiety by the way.

I'm 17, and overweight. Female. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
You are too young to be having these issues. You should take one thing at a time, starting with the primary issue which I believe is the root cause of your problems: you are overweight, and have a fatty liver.
When you have a fatty liver, you are reducing the effectiveness of the liver to do it's job. While there is no cure for fatty liver from medication or surgery, there is only one way to eliminate it. That way is to go on a diet and exercise plan. Not doing so could result in cirrhosis of the liver and death. The first thing you should do is lose weight and get in shape, you are too young to be having this many health issues. Get out there and enjoy your life. Below are some sites that have helped people through their condition.

  22. QUESTION:
I'm currently pregnant, low blood pressure, getting varicose veins?
I am currently 5 1/2 months pregnant. I just recently starting getting varicose veins on one of my legs and behind the knee. I have always had very low blood pressure, averaging around 55/80. After doing some research I noticed that a main cause of varicose veins is high blood pressure. However, I still have low blood pressure. I'm going to call my doctor on Monday, but for the time being I just want to know what could cause these varicose veins! Considering I am of healthy weight, at 5 1/2 months I am only 139 lbs. No history of diabetes or anything similar, consider myself to be healthy. I walk most of my day at work, about 4 days a week. I'm just confused as to why I am getting varicose veins when I have low blood pressure!

  25. QUESTION:
Varicose vein in left leg causing extreme cramping & shooting pain, should I go to the ER?
I have had a varicose vein in my left leg for about 2 years. The varicose vein runs the entire length of my leg but only a portion is visible. I needed surgery before but I didnt have any insurance. I recently got insurance and last night I woke up with extreme shooting and cramping pain in my left leg, mostly behind the knee and into my thigh. The pain has also been causing my vein to throb and quiver and feel as if my leg is falling asleep although it does not. The new doctor cant see me for about three weeks since I am a new patient and my old doctor moved to florida so I have nobody to ask right now.
What should I do? Is this something to be concerned about? Could this be a blood clot or something more serious? Should I go to the Emergency Room to have it checked out? Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this or has had what I am describing. I developed this at about 24-25 yrs old. I am now 27. Thanks

Please don't ignore the pain, especially if you think that it could be a blood clot.

what can i do ? what is this ?
no i want it to go away
    it's getting worse
and i'm not pale at all im tanned (natural tone)

    • ANSWER:
It could be varicose veins. They are brought about by factors that increase pressure in your legs like being overweight, prolonged standing, stockings, etc. There is also a hereditary disposition of the disease. For preventing its progression, the factors mentioned should be modified, lessened or eliminated if possible. Exercise, diet and not wearing tight clothing is a good start. Also stop any pill intake (if applicable) Another good tip is when arriving from work or school, while lying, rest for about 15 mins then raise your leg then bend your knees to a 90 degree angle against the wall for 5 mins. If you still see no improvement after some interventions then please see a doctor as soon as possible because the worst complication of this could be a clot in your veins causing pain and swelling which would then dislodge and travel to the veins in your lungs causing Pulmonary problems. 27. QUESTION:
Ankle still swollen 6 weeks after sprain?
About 6 weeks ago I sprained an ankle (2nd degree, tore a ligament) and I have nearly full ROM back now and it doesn't hurt........occasionally I would say that I can "feel" it, but not enough for it to actually be considered pain. But it's still swollen! The area over and around my ankle bone juts out twice as much as on the other side. Additionally, though this may not be related, veins behind my knee on the same leg are becoming more noticeable......as in, varicose vein looking, without actually being raised. Should I see a doctor, or is any of this normal?

    • ANSWER:
Contact your doctor just to be sure, but it is not uncommon to have swelling at the site of a soft tissue injury for months after the injury. Icing, elevating and over the counter anti-inflamatories (if you aren't allergic or if they won't interact with other meds you are on--- check with your doctor or pharmacist) will help with this.

Mini Pill Any One Got Information For Me?
So I have a 7 month old baby and I am looking to switch contraception, husband not keen on the condoms and I don't want another baby yet, so things are on hold until I can find a new option.

To cut a long story short, I have been researching the mini pill, as I suffer from migraines and have some small varicose veins behind one of my knees and am trying to loose the baby weight.

So my question is, is there anyone on here who is on the mini pill who has these issues as I know I can not take the main pill. Or do you know a medical site where they explain this.

I know I need to see my doctor and will do, its just I would like to know what I want before I go.

And do not have a go about my weight, I have lost 3 stone 12 pounds so far and only have 1 stone 8 pounds to go.
The mini-Pill is 'milder' than the ordinary Pill because it contains only one hormone, instead of two. That hormone is one of the group called progestogens.

  30. QUESTION:
how can i stop obsessing over small flaws?
I'm really really self conscious over the scars on my legs, and a tiny varicose vein that's behind my knee and I don't know how to get over them!
What can I do to stop being so obsessed with my flaws??

    • ANSWER:
Be happy with who you are!

Because you are really self-conscious about small things, then often that means that it will stand out to you and other people won't notice it!
Try not to think about them, and you will realise other people won't notice them too, because if you keep turning your eyeline down to the scars, then automatically others will look down to see what you are looking at. Try and pretend they're not there, and people won't notice.
Everyone has small flaws on them that only they notice and other people don't even realise they are there!

If you spend alot of time thinking about them, gradually try to reduce time than you spend thinking that they are therre, and eventually you shoulddn''t even realise they are there! And if you do, then you won't really be bothered. People are not bothered about what small flaws others have, but about there own instead! I'm sure all your friends don't notice because they are worried about spots etc... everyone does have small things they worry about.

      Good luck!x

  31. QUESTION:
    Knee problems?
My knee (well, my leg, really) has been hurting a lot lately... especially if I sit in one position for over 10 minutes or so. The pain is located behind the knee to the right of the left bone.

It feels like there may be something wrong with the vein and circulation because sometimes my left foot gets a lot colder than my right.

I find it feels a bit better if I massage or put pressure behind the knee. It usually is fine when I'm walking.

I spoke to my doctor, and he said that it could be varicose veins (and I do see some, but not in that area), but he dismissed it entirely. It feels like it's been getting worse and I've been noticing the pain a lot more. Any ideas what it could be? Or what I could do about it? Help!
I don't smoke, but I am on the pill.

    • ANSWER:
Go to see the doctor. You could have a blood clot in the area.
you did not mention if you were on birth control pills these can increase the probability of clots particularly if you smoke (anything).
the doctors dismissal with out an examination is more than adequate reason to get a new doctor.

      lol.

  32. QUESTION:
Why do these veins hurt so much?
I'm young and I have these nasty varicose veins.. They get worse every year. Yes, I've been tempted to go have them fixed but it's expensive plus I'm a big baby..

I wasn't on my feet yesterday all that much.. Well, I guess it's about the same amount of time every weekend.. But behind my knee, it feels like a big old bruise.. These things hurt.. Why do they hurt? And would it be beneficial for me to get them fixed. I know they are ugly but now they are hurting too.
ahhh it is that time of month too!! But I don't have any swelling of any kind. Yes, next time I see the doctor, maybe I can ask if insurance covers it.. I am really nervous about this procedure about the veins.

    • ANSWER:
See your health care provider as soon as possible (vascular surgeon), for consultation. There are several reasons for leg swelling. One of the most common is varicose veins, in which damage to valves in the large veins of the legs hinders the return of blood to the heart. Blood plasma, which is mostly water, pools in nearby tissue, causing swelling of the legs and feet. Excess dietary salt, sitting or standing for long periods, and hot weather can aggravate the swelling. Exercise such as walking or cycling helps. So does resting with your legs elevated. Water retention can also be caused by more serious problem, such as heart, liver, and kidney disorders.

In many people, varicose veins cause no symptoms, other than the appearance of the bulging, twisted vein beneath the skin.
However, in some people, symptom include:

An ache in the affected area

Swelling of the feet and ankles due to the fluid from stagnant blood leaking through the walls of the veins into surrounding tissues

A feeling of heaviness, tiredness, and aching, especially at the end of the day or after periods of prolonged standing

Persistent itching of the skin over the affected area

Changes in skin color-the skin over the affected area may turn a brownish gray color, especially around the ankles.

Varicose veins are often progressive, which means that symptoms may worsen over time. Significant complication are associated with more severe types of varicose veins.

Because increased progesterone levels are a contributing factor to varicose veins, women may experience more symptoms of varicose veins during their menstrual periods, or the veins may become more noticeable.

Today, the radiofrequency ablation (RFA) procedure is an alternative method in the treatment of varicose veins.
I hope this helps you. And good luck.

  33. QUESTION:
    Pinch in back of knee?
I am a 24 year old female an have had large vericose veins since I was 16. Starting this morning i have a pinching pain behind my left knee at the bending crease. I noticed the pain while walking today but recently noticed it is very sore to touch. I seem to have a lot of blue veins in that location, yet not on the other leg in this spot. After googling i am worried of a blood clot. The pain is not overwhelming, but is sore and uncomfortable. I am wondering if I can give it time to see if it fades or goes away, or if I shpuld seek medical advice first thing in the morning? Perhaps I am paranoid.. Could it be an irritated varicose vein? Pinched vein?
    Thanks for any input :)

    • ANSWER:
You should never ignore a pain like that in your leg. You should get it checked.

  34. QUESTION:
i'm fifteen and i have spider veins?!?
OMG. I'm freaking out! Spider and varicose veins run in my family tree A LOT and I just happen to be so lucky to start getting spider veins this year... and i have quite a lot behind my knees and the upper part of my thighs. And I thought stretch marks and cellulite were bad enough...But I'm not even overweight! (I'm 5'3 and weight 115 lb.) And it sucks specially because having them makes me unable to treat cellulite (I massage my legs) ...

Uuuh I hate this! How do I treat it!? I'M FIFTEEN! does that mean that my the age of 25 my skin will be completely purple with spider veins?!!! :(

    Help me pleasee!

    • ANSWER:
Relax. You are young and if you take care of yourself, you will be OK.

My spider veins are much less noticeable since I started taking Apple Cider Vinegar.

The best kind of apple cider vinegar to use is the 'Organic, Raw and Unfiltered' with the 'mother' as the regular brands are too processed. The two most popular organic brands are 'BRAGG' and 'Solana Gold'. You can purchase them at Whole Food Market or other health food stores. It is an inexpensive product, about for a quart and for a gallon.

Mix 1 cup of water + 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar + 1/4 teaspoon baking soda. Drink this 2-3 times a day.

If you do not like the above recipe taste (it tastes somewhat like beer) then try the following supplements which I have read are also effective with spider veins:

      - Micronized Diosmin
      - Bilberry
      - Bioflavonoids

Google these using also 'spider veins' as a keyword to find more information, which are the best to take, and where you can purchase them.

  35. QUESTION:
    Veins in legs becomeing visable??
I have never had varicose veins or spider veins. I have also been pretty active my whole life. But recently I have become less active, I am not overweight by any means. Anyway, the vines on my thighs and behind my knees are becoming darker and more visible. I also notice them developing on my hips and my sides. I am worried! Could that have anything to do with high blood pressure or lack of exercise or smoking? Is there anything I can do or eat or take that can prevent this from becoming worse?? (by the way, I am 22)

    • ANSWER:

      issues? 1. weight, 2. acne, 3. varicose veins,4. boobs 5. scars

      1. if you want to deal with your weight, it WILL be hard. im not gonna lie about that. im 5'1 and 140 and i think im a bit fat. so what do i do? i TRY to make health choices. that's all you gotta do, TRY. become vegetarian, the weight will come off like that. i became vegetarian for like 2 months and lost 15lbs. instead of the cheeseburger, eat the burger, take off the bread [bread =carbs=BAD] . stop the weight watchers, those things DONT work. they just want the money. so try to make it work.

      2. acne. its something VERY big to everyone. ohmygod another pimple? try proactive, it WORKS WONDERS. if you dont have the money to keep up with it, make sure to wash your face with dove when you wake up and before going to sleep. use sea breeze and blot it on your acne with a cotton ball. IT WILL BURN, but it WILL work.

      3. varicose veins. ive never had them, or expirience with them, but theyre easy to cover up. if you want to wear skirts, wear shear leggings or stockings, theres also surgery to get them removed, and if you want a surgery, thats the one to get.

      4. boobs. booobs.boobs. every woman has them, theres nothing we can do. just get different bras that displace the weight differently. if your on the bigger side, get bras with thick straps and underwire, it will lift them and give you good coverage. but if you lose weight, expect to go down a bra size,

      5. as for the scars. MAKEUP!, it works WONDERS

i hope i helped, if you need anything else and liked my answer, im here, to help =]

Sudden onset last night. Discomfort, more than pain, on the inside dimple behind my knee on one leg. I feel it when I walk. I'm thinking onset of varicose veins (how sexy) or a blood clot. Age is mid-40's. Otherwise, very good health. Any other ideas?

    • ANSWER:
Very difficult to diagnose a blood clot clinically. Get a scan to exclude it urgently.

  39. QUESTION:
Back Leg Pain - What is causing it?
The back of my leg, from mid-thigh to just below my knee, has been hurting for just under a week now. I woke up Monday morning, and when I started standing out of bed, I felt this extreme pain.

Because I can't straighten my leg, it has caused me to walk with it slightly bended. When I lay in bed, if I focus on getting through the pain, I can straighten my leg.

I have varicose veins scattered around this leg, but I've never experienced pain this strong and definitely not as long from having these veins. When I touch the exact point where it feels like the pain is originating from, it is right behind the knee.

Icy Hot and a heating pad have not worked. I've used both Advil and Aleve to help with the pain, both of which I don't think is working. And like I said, it's been almost a week since this started. So I don't know if this is muscle-related, varicose vein-related, or something else.

I've tried Web MD and a little research online, but I haven't come up with any results. I'm wondering if someone can help me diagnose what is wrong. I don't have health insurance, so I can't just go to the ER or something.

I don't know what else to say. Maybe if one of you answers with a question to get more information, I could provide it but they will need to come back to read my answer.

    Please someone help.
I don't have a history with any injury or strain and I didn't have any kind of unusual activity the previous day. I live a rather safe life.

I'm not couching and I don't have back pain, but it does hurt to try to bend down. I can't bend my leg a whole lot just like I can't straighten it.

There are not any changes in warmth or redness in the affected area.

I am laid off and I do not smoke.
Well, I went to a low-income clinic yesterday, and I was diagnosed with tendinitis. Yeah for me. :(

But I am feeling better now. It's getting easier to walk. So I guess it's healing. Hopefully it won't take much longer as tomorrow will be two weeks since it started.

Thank you all for your responses.

      How old are you?
Get a second opinion. It could be deep vein thrombosis...aka a clot in your leg. They are treated with thrombolytics...blood thinners. However, if untreated, they can be serious. If a clot dislodges, it could go to your brain or lungs, which is REALLY bad.
Another thing to expect, if it IS a clot, they'll want you to stay off your feet. Might also be a good idea to do anyway, until you know for sure.

  41. QUESTION:
Why do I have pain in my legs?
Okay...this all started 3 years ago when I was 8 months pregnant with my daughter. I have pains in my legs, pretty much only behind my knees. (more my left) I was told by my ob that I had varicose veins, even though we cannot see them. The pain has gotten worse and better over the years. Now sometimes it is SO uncomfortable, I can't even kneel. And sometimes when I bend my knees they pop, it doesn't hurt; just freaks me out. It almost feels like I have alot of pressure in my knees...any ideas people? I am going to the doctor for this, just trying to get an idea before I go. Thanks!

Oh and sometimes when I am sitting on the floor with my legs straight out, my left (worse) leg goes numb and I have to move.

I am 22 years old, and not a huge person. I weigh 155 and I am 5'4". I used to be 185 after my daughter...and I have lost alot of weight and it got better. But now worse again.

    Leg Pain While Standing?
I am a 21 year old female and I recently started working at a packaging plant 2nd shift. Its 10 hours a day for 4 days. Recently I have started experiencing severe leg pain right behind the knees, reaching up to my thighs, back and lower calves. Its painful to stretch them and I limp for awhile after sitting during breaks. I wear tennis shoes, ones that I was told were good for long periods of standing. For a few weeks I thought maybe it was the shoes, or that I wasn't used to standing that long but this weekend while at a Horse Show with some family I noticed it again and the whole weekend I wore either my Vans (skater shoes) or my sandals which are Earth Spirit and very comfy. Tonight (as I type) its almost like a charlie horse but more sharp. I did notice some varicose veins on my right leg but very faint. I sprained my back last year but I don't think that matters to my knees. My girlfriend says that maybe I should take some Gluclosomine tablets but I don't know...has anybody else had anything like this?

    • ANSWER:
Lumbar disc problem. The pain will go down your leg because it is pushing on the nerve. The lower the pain goes on your leg, the worse the problem is getting. I had herniated discs that eventually ruptured. If the pain is primarily on your left side, it is called sciatica. Even after back surgery, I cannot stand for a long period of time and try not to walk, I ride a bike instead, makes my lower back feel so much better. Don't lift anything until this is checked because it will only make it worse. Sometimes it can take along time for things to come to a head. See a doctor. Tell him/her how long this has been going on. If it happened at work, tell your doctor before you report it to them.

  43. QUESTION:
I am 29 weeks pregnant and paranoid about blood clots?
Last week I had a doppler done of my left leg because i had pain everything was fine. Then two days after that I woke up with a charley horse and the soreness lasted about 4 days,I know this is common. The other night I woke up with another charley horse, not as bad as the first. Last night I started getting pain right behind my left knee, like on the crease or bend. I am having sharp pains and some soreness, like muscle soreness, which could just be from the cramp, but I also have a burning sensation and if I stretch my leg it hurts. I called my ob and she said that since my fiance saw a vein it could be a varicose vein, but of course true to my nature I am freaking out. It also felt like I had a cut, like the soreness you get from a paper cut, although not as bad, and when DF touched it it hurt, not horribly but enough. I ve been trying to walk more since I heard that that helps with circulation, and I know all sorts of weird pains are common in pregnancy, any advice?
Do you think even though I just got it checked I should go again? This time its different symptoms but I literally went last Friday to have it looked at, would it develop that fast? My ob said since I went last week that I shouldn't freak out and just watch it. Last week though I didnt have the burning, she said varicose veins hurt as well. I am not sure if the pain is so bad just because I am freaking out and getting worried.

    • ANSWER:
try and increase your potassium intake, that will help if it is just muscle cramps (charlie horse), eat bananas or you can get it in liquid form (talk to your doc before adding any vitamins to your daily intake) and pour it in orange juice or some other drink to cover up the taste. frequent walks, drinking plenty of fluids, and warm baths will also help. I had them with my first and found a lot of things helped but the potassium was the only thing that stopped them.

  44. QUESTION:
i have varicose veins!! How do you get rid of these? What type of surgery is most effective?
Ive never had varicose veins before!! I have small spider veins which arent that bad b/c im olive coloured but now with this pregnancy i have a big varicose vein behind my knee going down my calf and another one starting just below my bum on my upper thigh in the back. I started wearing those compression socks at work but i know its too late. What type of surgery is effective with the less amount of pain? Any suggestions of any good clinics in Michigan near Detroit?

    • ANSWER:
Once you have had your baby, see if the veins are still there. With all the hormonal things and extra weight, and extra blood being pumped around the body, the veins are likely to be big now. You may find they go away after the baby is born. Often they do. Sometimes they don't and if they are still bothering you then surgery where they clamp and cut, then strip the vein out of the leg is often the best way to get rid of them. If they are smaller then often a saline injection can reduce their size.
      Good luck with it all!

I have bulging varicose vein behind my right knee. No pain or bleeding yet but I find it really ugly!
I'm only 19 but i'm still a student so I didn't stand around a lot. I tried elevating my right leg during my sleep but it doesn't help. Help me! I'm really depressed about it and I don't have thousands to fork out for expensive surgeries. I can fork out hundreds though.

I can't find any picture on the internet to show you because mine isn't as serious as those on the internet yet. But mine is only behind the knees and it has not extend out to my lower calve yet. I only have varicose vein on my right leg. Tell me what can I do to get rid of them please? I'm really miserable about it

    • ANSWER:
It's normal, I was about 13 or 14 when I had my first spider veins, and I had them allover. Many women, even younger than you have varicose veins. You can get them removed, but it's expensive, and it takes more than one office visit for complete removal, and that's not even guaranteeing their removal, temporarily or permanently. You shouldn't fret about it, many people probably can't see it.

    • ANSWER:
(((Ocean))) I can SO relate to you. I have struggled with really bad acne for most of my life (so bad I was on the acne drug Accutane), but it does eventually usually go away, right? I also have spider veins, bigger boobs (that always require a bra), cellulite (show me most women that don't?), & I certainly could stand to lose a good 25 pounds that I just recently gained due to taking medication for my Bipolar Disorder (so yes, I also know what severe depression is). What I am getting at is so many "real" women think this badly about themselves & alot of this has to do with seeing all these women on tv & movies that we may "think" are perfect but certainly aren't (inside & out). You are doing what you can about your weight by going to a gym & trying weight watchers, you can always cover up acne scars & spider veins with make up, etc. Give yourself a major break woman! Everyone has bad days & it sounds like your having a really bad one. Stop being so hard on yourself. I know you can't feel this bad about yourself all the time?
